Description:

In this experimental course we will work directly with the Michigan Office of the Great Lakes (MI-OGL) and local community stakeholders in the 5 Great Lakes coastal Areas of Concern (AOCs; areas with the worst legacy industrial contaminants and impairments) that face the greatest challenges for restoration and community revitalization.  Student teams will engage with local stakeholders to together re-frame long-discouraging community narratives and outline action plans for short-, mid-, and long-term success.  These co-developed action plans will be provided to the MI-OGL at semester’s end.  Class time will involve both exploration of factors influencing successful community engagement in challenging ecosystem management cases and discussions with expert guests.
