Course overview: Interviews, case studies, and texts are important sources of information on environment and sustainability issues. These methods yield data about how and why people think and behave in the ways that they do, and the broader context in which people make decisions. Because these methods yield large amounts of rich, descriptive data, analysis generally follows a qualitative approach. This course will introduce students to techniques, tools, and frameworks for qualitative data analysis. The course will follow a combined lecture and studio format in which students will receive guidance on how to conduct qualitative data analysis as well as peer feedback on their own qualitative data analysis efforts. Class meetings will involve short lectures by the instructor, qualitative data analysis exercises, and collaborative studios. Students will learn about methods for analyzing qualitative data by hand and with the aid of software.
