Ecosystem Management Programs and Research

The following are some cases of ecosystem management and ecosystem-level research or assessment. See also the cases illustrating collaboration and links related to ecosystem evaluation.

 

Animas River Stakeholders Group - The mission of the Animas River Stakeholders Group (ARSG) is to improve water quality and habitats in the Animas River (CO) through a collaborative process designed to encourage participation from all interested parties.

 

Applegate Partnership - The Applegate Partnership (OR) is a community based project encouraging and facilitating the use of natural resource principles that promote ecosystem, health and diversity. Through community involvement and education, this partnership supports management of all land within the watershed in a manner that sustains natural resources and that will, in turn, contribute to economic and community well being within the Applegate Valley.

 

Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program - A cooperative agreement between the State of Louisiana and the Environmental Protection Agency under the National Estuary Program, focusing on the management and protection of the Barataria and Terrebonne estuaries.

 

Bitterroot Ecosystem Management/Research Project - Begun in 1994, this project addresses questions regarding the social, biophysical, and management challenges of applying ecosystem management principles on National Forest system lands, focusing on the Bitterroot National Forest in western Montana and Northeastern Idaho.

 

Cascade Center for Ecosystem Management - The Center was established in 1991 to integrate the research program of the Andrews Experimental Forest with new forest management practices, using an adaptive management model.

 

Chesapeake Bay Foundation- the Chesapeake Bay Foundation is the largest nonprofit conservation organization working solely to Save the Bay. Founded in 1967, CBF's main programs focus on resource protection and restoration, and environmental education

 

Chesapeake Bay Program - A regional partnership that has been directing and conducting the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay since the signing of the 1993 Chesapeake Bay Agreement. Partners include the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

 

Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program (formerly: Corpus Christi Bay National Estuary Program) - A National Estuary Program started in 1987 along the Texas coast.

 

Coweeta LTER - Research focuses on hydrology within an ecosystem context, within the Coweeta basin in North Carolina

 

The Diablo Trust - A collaborative group of ranchers, environmentalists, agency representatives, educators, community leaders, and others who for the last five years have been managing approximately 400,000 acres of Forest and High Desert land located about 30 miles east of Flagstaff, Arizona on the Flying M and Bar T Bar Ranches.

 

Dunes Center - An education and research center for the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Complex in Guadalupe, California.

 

Ecosystem Charter for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Basin - Since its release in 1994, more than 160 agencies and organizations have endorsed the Charter, a summary of commonly held principles and vision statement based on an ecosystem-approach to resource management and protection.

 

Ecosystem Management Programs in Hawaii - An overview of six ecosystem management programs in Hawaii.

 

Fish Creek Watershed Project - A bistate effort between Ohio and Indiana designed to preserve the ecological diversity of the Fish Creek Watershed by managing soil erosion on agricultural lands and reducing sedimentation inputs into the aquatic system.

 

Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center - The Center studies the effects of the operation of the Glen Canyon Dam on downstream resources within the Glen Canyon National Recreation area and Grand Canyon National Park, working within an adaptive management program.

 

Great Lakes Ecological Assessment - A federal interagency effort to collect and consolidate new and existing environmental, biological, and socioeconomic information in the Northern Lake States. Includes many GIS and photo resources.

 

Greater Yellowstone Coalition - Summary of coalition's activities in the extensive Greater Yellowstone ecosystem, including many facts about the ecosystem and threats to it.

 

Henry's Fork Watershed Council - The Henry’s Fork Watershed Council (ID, WY) is a grassroots, community forum that uses a nonadversarial, consensus-based approach to problem solving and conflict resolution among citizens, scientists and agencies with varied perspectives.

 

H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest - Center for analysis of forest and stream ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest.

 

Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study - Study of forest and associated aquatic ecosystems, based on the 3,160 hectare reserve located in the White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire.

 

Indiana Grand Kankakee Marsh Restoration Project - A project dedicated to the recovery and perpetuation of waterfowl populations by protecting, enhancing, and restoring the wetlands and associated ecosystems of the Indiana Grand Kankakee Marsh.

 

Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project - A project overseen by the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management focusing on developing a "scientifically sound and ecosystem-based strategy for management of east side forests" located in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana.

 

Lake Champlain Basin Program - A federal, state and local initiative to restore and protect Lake Champlain and its surrounding watershed for future generations.

 

Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge - 65,000 acre refuge south of Alamo, Texas.

 

McKenzie Watershed Council - A council formed to help address watershed management issues in the McKenzie Watershed.

 

Michigan Sea Grant College Program - The Michigan Sea Grant College Program is one of 30 programs established across the nation to promote the understanding and intelligent use of the Great Lakes and oceans. Originally established in 1969 at the University of Michigan, MI Sea Grant became a partnership with Michigan State University in 1972 and receives funding through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

 

Nebraska Sandhills - A Sandhills Task Force was convened to enhance the sandhill wetland-grassland ecosystem in a way that sustains profitable private ranching, wildlife and vegetation diversity, and associated water supplies.

 

Northern Delaware Wetlands Rehabilitation Program - A program established by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control to bring together a group of diverse stakeholders to develop strategies to restore nearly 100,000 acres of wetlands.

 

Olympic National Forest & Ecosystem Management - The ecosystem management plan for the Olympic National Forest located in Washington state.

 

Ozark-Ouachita Highlands Assessment - An effort to compile an information base on the physical, biological, and socioeconomic roles of the Region's National Forests, focusing on the Ouachita National Forest in Arizona.

 

Rainwater Basin Joint Venture - A project focusing on restoring and maintaining sufficient wetland habitat in the Rainwater Basin area of Nebraska.

 

River Flows in the Great Lakes - A research project designed to bring a greater understanding and focus on the behavior of moving water in order to frame new solutions to old problems affecting the ecological integrity of the Great Lakes basin.

 

San Miguel Watershed Coalition - This group formed in 1990 to address river corridor issues and consists of federal, state, local and private stakeholders.

 

Santa Catalina Island Ecological Restoration Program - A site cataloguing the natural and social history of Santa Catalina Island off the coast of California.

 

Sierra Nevada Ecosystem Project - A congressionally mandated 3-year study of the entire Sierra Nevada range, completed June 1996.

 

Snake River Corridor Project - A project that coordinates numerous agency management efforts affecting the Snake River in Wyoming.

 

Southern Appalachian Assessment - An assessment of the Southern Appalachian ecosystems completed in 1996, featuring GIs data of the region.

 

Southern Forest Resource Assessment - An effort to compile and analyze data and information necessary to evaluate the status of the forest resources of the Southern US. Features extensive data and GIs information.

 

South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force - Founded in 1993 based on an agreement between five federal Departments and the Environmental Protection Agency, the Task Force coordinates the development of consistent policies and programs for addressing the environmental concerns of South Florida.

 

US Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network - A collaborative effort investigating ecological processes over long temporal and broad spatial scales, sponsored by the National Science Foundation.


University of Florida: Ecosystem Management as a Basis for Forest Stewardship on Private Lands - Overview of Ecosystem Management

 

University of Michigan: Recent Trends in Ecosystem Management - Study of 100 Ecosystem Management projects in the US, focusing on ecological and process outcomes of EM approaches, facilitating and impeding factors that influenced those outcomes, and measures of success.

 

Upper Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program -A partnership of public and private organizations working to recover these endangered species while allowing continued and future water development.
