Globally over 3 billion people rely on woodfuels for cooking and heating with tremendous implications for human well-being, climate, and environment. The complex dynamics of land use change, poverty, migration, and urbanization make this problem particularly intractable in sub-Saharan Africa where the absolute number of people using forest resources as their primary source of household energy is expected to grow in coming decades.

Designing Your Research Trip

This session will offer general guidance for students and scholars who are planning a research trip to archives, libraries and other cultural institutions abroad. The session will provide information about conducting research in specific countries and/or regions, and will focus on identifying collections and materials of interest, gathering required documents and permissions for access, making contacts with local experts and institutions, and technology planning.
