While most of us know that airplanes have a massive environmental footprint, it can be difficult to apply that knowledge to our own lives and use it to judge the impact of our own travels. Envisioning something so abstract as the massive amount of carbon produced by a flight is a challenge. And when flying is the only option to reach a destination, should it be a flight home or one to reach a research opportunity or even to get to a much-needed vacation, that great unknown can also add undue stress on the climate conscious.
This tool will help illuminate that data, presenting the carbon production of flights across the country and the globe. It will also help show the impact of new technologies which are shifting us away from fossil fuels, as an increasing number of flights switch to biofuels. Though not perfect, the reduced carbon footprint is illustrated graphically here.
