Speaker Biography: Rebecca J. Goldburg

Rebecca Goldburg is a Senior Scientist at Environmental Defense's New York City headquarters. Trained as an ecologist, Goldburg is active in public policy issues concerning food production—primarily ecological and food safety issues concerning agricultural biotechnology, aquaculture (fish farming), and antibiotic resistance from overuse of antibiotics in agriculture. Goldburg is a member of USDA's Advisory Committee on Agricultural Biotechnology, the US State Department's US-EU Consultative Forum on Biotechnology, and USDA's National Organic Standards Board. She recently served on the National Academy of Science's Committee on Genetically Modified Pest-Protected Crops.

Goldburg is a frequent speaker and an author of numerous publications, including Biotechnology's Bitter Harvest: Herbicide Tolerant Crops and the Threat to Sustainable Agriculture (Biotechnology Working Group, 1990), A Mutable Feast: Assuring Food Safety in an Era of Genetic Engineering (EDF, 1991), Murky Waters: Environmental Effects of Aquaculture in the United States (EDF, 1997), and "Effect of Aquaculture on World Fish Supplies" (Nature, 2000).

Dr. Goldburg holds an A.B. in Statistics from Princeton University and an M.S. in Statistics and Ph.D. in Ecology from the University of Minnesota.
