Ecology of the Heart: Public Lands, Communities and the Quest for Sustainability

Gloria Flora, Executive Director of Sustainable Obtainable Solutions and Former Forest Supervisor at the U.S. Forest Service

Some background on Ms. Flora:

In her 22-year career with the U.S. Forest Service, including serving as Forest Supervisor of the largest national forest in the lower 48 states, Gloria Flora became nationally known both for her leadership and for her courageous principled stands.

She made national headlines when she decided against allowing oil and gas development along the Rocky Mountain Front and again when she resigned as Forest Supervisor to call attention to antigovernment zealots engaged in the harassment and intimidation of Forest Service employees.

Today Ms. Flora is the Director of Sustainable Obtainable Solutions, a nonprofit dedicated to the sustainability of public lands and of the plants, animals and communities that depend on them. She works on Western lands issues through education and activism and speaks on ecosystem stewardship, sustainability, people's relationships to landscapes and on the critical role of leadership that strives to make a difference.

For her outstanding stewardship of public lands, she has received many regional and national awards, including the Murie Award from the Wilderness Society, the Environmental Quality Award for exemplary resource decision-making from the Natural Resources Council of America, the Environmental Hero Award from Sunset Magazine, and the Environmental Leadership Award from Ecology Law Quarterly for her influence on environmental policy.
