Skills Module: Land Conservation Tools Workshop
The Doris Duke Conservation Fellows and the Ecosystem Management Initiative are pleased to announce a Professional Skills Module on Land Conservation Tools featuring presenters:
Barry Lonik, Land Protection Consultant and former Executive Director of Washtenaw Land Trust
Larissa Larsen, Assistant Professor of Urban Planning at the Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning
The presenters will discuss techniques for conserving land for individuals, and private and public organizations, and address the logistics, incentives, and effectiveness of these tools in a range of contexts, including farmland, natural areas, and planned communities. Following the presentations, attendees will participate in an interactive exercise to explore the best options for conserving particularly pieces of property given specific objectives.
BARRY LONIK (SNRE '87) was the Washtenaw Land Trust's first executive director, serving in that role from May, 1994 to December, 2001. He is now a consultant working with nonprofits, local governments, private landowners and conservation buyers toward the protection of natural and agricultural lands. Through these and other diverse roles, he has coordinated the grassroots effort to advocate the establishment of a farmland protection program in Washtenaw County. Through Barry's many land preservation efforts, nearly 2,000 acres of land have been permanently protected in and around Washtenaw County to date.
LARISSA LARSEN (TCAUP, Asst. Professor of Urban Planning) explores the ways our landscapes shape us and the multitude of ways in which we now shape the natural landscape. Her courses and research relate to physical planning, community development, and environmental planning. She holds a bachelor of applied science and master of landscape architecture from the University of Guelph (Canada) and has her Ph.D. in regional planning from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
