Bumps in the road

A Forest Service Recreation Specialist gives directions to a hiker in the Green Mountains National Forest, Vermont. Just because people have decided that they need to work together in a collaborative way does not mean that doing so will be seamless and easy. While a collaborative approach brings more knowledge, ideas, resources and capabilities to bear on a problem or issue, it does not magically simplify what are often complicated situations. The problems have not become less complex, the conflict between groups and individuals has not disappeared, the new process of working together is not without its own set of challenges. Collaborative groups inevitably encounter bumps in the road as they grapple with old and new issues in a different manner. What might you expect? What are some of the challenges that collaborative groups encounter and how have they been addressed?
