EAS 501.123 - AI, Data and Environmental Justice
This course is about enhancing conversations on AI, Environmental Data, and justice in critical, applied ways. The course aims to build an understanding of how AI is used in environmental data. It is also concerned with evaluating how, where, and to what effect the datafication of the environment intersects with environmental and social justice efforts. The course is divided into three parts. First, students will use introductory terms, definitions, and contexts associated with data justice, and will also introduce measurement and models, data science, and surveillance. The second part of the course concerns the themes in environmental data governance, including environmental law and AI, environmental health and diseases, conservation, forests, urban areas, marine life, and wildlife. The final part of the class will discuss data activism, justice, land rights, and environmental destruction/ecocide. The course ends with a mock conference in which students present proposals for future work at the intersection of AI and environmental justice.
