EAS 501.183 - Environmental Advocacy
How can environmental groups successfully advocate for the enactment of policies to address problems like climate change and pollution? In this course, we will use historical and recent case studies to examine environmental organizations' strategies such as grassroots organizing, coalition-building, and legislative lobbying. To understand what can make these strategies effective, we will consider the incentives and information available to policymakers, including their relationships with political parties and interest groups. While the course will focus mostly on cases of advocacy in the United States at the state and federal levels, it will also include cases in other countries and at the international level. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills that will prepare them for communication and negotiation with policymakers, stakeholder groups, and the broader public.
