A new study led by the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) that examined the housing market impacts of cleaning up the Great Lakes shows that the awarding of federal grants to remediate these areas increased property values by an average of $27,295 per house.

Despite concerns about the cost to clean up these areas, known as "Areas of Concern," or AOCs, the study found that the benefits of remediation outweighed the costs. 

Michael R. Moore, a professor of environmental economics at SEAS, is study co-author.
