June 22, 2022

This summer we are posting discussion questions on SEASnet as a way for you to share your experiences, connect with members of the community, and share advice for incoming students. You can even win SEAS swag by participating!

To start, we hosted a photo contest and invited members to post their favorite photos from their travels.

Congratulations to Sara Srinivasan (MS ’14), Leonard Ang (AB ’16), Kia Billings (BS ’19, MS ’21), and Sydni Joubran (BS ’18), who were the first-, second-, and third-place winners. Our thanks to everyone who submitted photos of their adventures!

Not a member of SEASnet? Join now. You can view more travel photos, as well as participate in our discussions.

First-Place Winner

Sara Srinivasan (MS ’14)

“The Sustainers” are wind turbines in the hills of the holy city of Tirumala, India, with a wooden figure of Vishnu, who is believed to be the sustainer of the world. The Tirumala-Tirupari temple complex is visited by 50,000-100,000 devotees every day and generates 38% of its power needs with solar energy and 28% with wind power, aiming to set an example in how to live and power infrastructure.

Second-Place Winner

Leonard Ang (AB ’16)

This is Hutt Lagoon in Western Australia; it’s a marine salt lake that glows pink, orange, or red depending on the microalgae within. Here’s an overhead drone shot of the orange waters, a campervan, and Leonard and his dancing fiancé, while on a nine-day camping trip along the Indian Ocean Drive.

Third-Place Winner

Kia Billings (BS ’19, MS ’21)

Here is a mountain lake at 5000 meters in Peru that Kia visited last month. Such a cool view!

Honorable Mention

Sydni Joubran (BS ’18)

Big Daddy sand dune in the Namib Desert, in the Sossusvlei region of Namibia. It is one of the highest sand dunes in the world, standing at 325 meters!
