EAS 501.042 Environmental Justice New Directions
The goal of this course is to focus on current issues and likely future directions in the environmental justice field and movement. In doing so, we will examine the current state of environmental justice research and evaluate how much progress has been made to date in policy developments to address and solve the problems, as well as assess where future efforts need to be directed. We will attempt to get the perspectives of community, academic, and government leaders. Interest in environmental justice has spread to other countries around the world. The U.S., however, has been seen as the leader on this issue. Those studying environmental justice in Europe and in developing countries have relied on U.S. involvements to guide them. A comparison between environmental justice movements in the U.S. and internationally will thus also be made. At the end of the course, students should not only have a good understanding of the current state of environmental justice but also be prepared to analyze, critique, and contribute to the academic and political debates surrounding it. There are no prerequisites for this course.
