International applicants follow the same SEAS graduate application process as other applicants, with additional requirements related to English proficiency and, after admission, immigration documentation.
International application deadlines
- PhD application deadline: December 1, 2026
- Master's priority funding deadline: December 15, 2026
- Master's final funding deadline: January 14, 2027
- International master's application deadline: April 1, 2027
English proficiency tests
Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency through TOEFL or IELTS scores unless they meet the Rackham Graduate School's criteria for an exemption.

How much does it cost to apply?
International applicants to SEAS graduate degree programs pay a reduced $50 application fee. Application fee waivers are not currently available for international applicants.
Are SEAS master's degrees STEM-designated?
Yes. Both the Master of Science (MS) and Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) at SEAS are STEM-designated degree programs.
Eligible international graduates in F-1 status who complete a STEM-designated degree may apply for a 24-month STEM extension of Optional Practical Training (OPT), following their standard post-completion OPT, subject to federal eligibility requirements.

Student visas after admission
After you accept your admission offer and establish your U-M account, Rackham Graduate School and the U-M International Center guide you through the immigration-document process using M-Passport.
Rackham Admissions prepares the I-20 for F-1 students or DS-2019 for J-1 students after the required immigration and financial documentation has been submitted and approved.
You should not begin this process through SEAS Admissions.

International students have access to resources across SEAS and the University of Michigan. The U-M International Center provides information and advising on immigration, visas, employment, taxes, Social Security, health insurance and adjusting to life in the United States. The English Language Institute offers English-language and academic communication support. SEAS students can also receive academic, personal and community support through the SEAS Student Center.
