Michigan releases draft of its first environmental justice screening tool; SEAS alumni contributed to tool’s development
The state of Michigan has released a draft of the Michigan Environmental Justice Mapping and Screening Tool (MiEJScreen), which helps identify and address places where residents are disproportionately burdened by environmental hazards. The screening tool was developed to help inform planning and policy decisions and be a resource for all Michiganders to better understand and address the environmental factors that communities face.
Several alumni of the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) contributed to the tool’s development, including Laura Grier (MS ’19), Delia Mayor (MS ’19), and Brett Zeuner (MS ‘19), who examined the feasibility of creating a Michigan-specific environmental justice screening tool, and Molly Blondell (MS ’20) and Arianna Zrzavy (MS ’20), who provided recommendations on the development of a screening tool in Michigan.
Public comment and input on the screening tool will be accepted through May 16.
