About Shannan Gibb-Randall
Shannan Gibb-Randall is principal of InSite Design Studio, a small landscape architecture firm in Ann Arbor that does work primarily in southeast Michigan.
She practices ecologically sensitive site design and rainwater management with high aesthetic value. Her work straddles art and science and is grounded in balancing the needs of people and the living world so that both can flourish. Her work lives and thrives in highly urbanized settings to rural landscapes, each uniquely tailored to the local ecological opportunities, design and program parameters, and distinct visual preferences of each client. Her portfolio includes large institutional settings, parks, publicly owned stormwater infrastructure, commercial venues, and nonprofit and residential design work.
Gibb-Randall has shared her ecological design expertise through volunteer positions with Ann Arbor’s Planning Commission, Environmental Commission, Downtown Development Authority’s Partners Committee, Downtown Design Review Board, and the development of the A2 Zero Carbon Neutrality Plan. She is asked frequently to speak publicly about her work and received Washtenaw County’s Leadership in Environmental Excellence Award in 2020.
She graduated from U-M’s Residential College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1990, where she focused on art history and anthropology, and from SEAS with a Master of Landscape Architecture in 1998.
About the Lecture
The SmithGroup JJR Endowed Lecture provides funding for an annual memorial lecture in honor of Clarence Roy, founding partner of JJR. It was the donor’s desire that the lecture be given by a U-M alum on a topic related to the theme of sustainability in landscape architecture.
