Newell, Reich announced as 2025 Highly Cited Researchers
University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) faculty Josh Newell and Peter Reich have been named 2025 Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate/Web of Science. Highly Cited Researchers demonstrate significant and broad influence in their field(s) of research. Each researcher selected has authored multiple Highly Cited Papers which rank in the top 1% by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the Web of Science Core Collection over the past 11 years. This year, Clarivate has given 7,131 Highly Cited Researcher awards to 6,868 individuals, including more than 20 from the University of Michigan.
The 2025 Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates individuals who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their fields of research, according to Clarivate. Through rigorous selection criteria and comprehensive analysis, researchers are recognized for their exceptional and community-wide contributions that shape the future of science, technology and academia globally. The program also emphasizes a commitment to research integrity.
Newell, a professor at SEAS, is a broadly trained human-environment geographer, whose research focuses on questions related to urban sustainability, resource consumption, and environmental and social justice.
Reich is also a SEAS professor and the director of the Institute for Global Change Biology. He conducts global change research on plants, soils, and ecosystems across a range of scales.
