Statement from SEAS Dean Jonathan Overpeck
We woke up today to a trifecta of environmental challenges.
Wildfire smoke threatening the air we breathe. A Cyclospora outbreak reminding us that safe food can't be taken for granted. And the approval of critical Line 5 permits, putting the future of the Great Lakes, and the drinking water millions depend on, at risk.
Clean air. Safe food. Fresh water. The basic necessities of life. If you're looking for a sign to step up for the planet, this is it. If you are thinking "someone should do something about this," that someone is ALL of us. Don't let today's headlines discourage you, but instead consider this a call to action to keep going on whatever environmental action means to you, whether it's advocating for environmental policy or shifting away from fossil fuels. We all have a role to play.
These aren't separate stories. Environmental policy matters. Public health matters. Coalition building matters. We are all on this planet and in this moment together. Walk out the front door. Our planet is in crisis and it's on all of us to decide what comes next.
