The University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) Center for Sustainable Systems (CSS) has released a report analyzing the travel emissions of the U-M football team, which is part of the ever-expanding Big Ten Conference. With the inclusion of USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington in 2024, the conference's reach from coast to coast has raised sustainability concerns, particularly regarding increased carbon emissions from additional travel.
The report estimates the impact of travel-related emissions for U-M football, examines the alignment of increased travel emissions with sustainability commitments, and proposes strategies to mitigate environmental impacts while maintaining the conference’s competitive spirit.
