Café Gran Batey and the Formation of an Agroecological Landscape
In this report we investigate and document the intersection of biodiversity, ecosystem services, farmer networks, and just farm transitions by partnering with The Instituto para la Investigación y Acción en Agroecología de Puerto Rico (IALA-PR). This organization recently acquired a 2-hectare coffee farm in Utuado, Puerto Rico, with a goal of transforming Café Gran Batey into an agroecological and educational hub, training center, and social convening space for the region, deepening environmental justice and ethical land use frameworks. IALA-PR proposed three research avenues: 1) research to understand how agroecological methods are implemented, and what may be barriers to embracing practices that align with IALA-PR’s values; 2) basic research on biodiversity and the ecosystem service of pest control that can serve as baseline data for the agroecological transformation of the farms; and 3) develop interpretive trails that could be used for outreach and education for the local community and visitors from Puerto Rico and abroad.
