Connecting People and Nature in Biosphere Regions
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO Man) and the Biosphere Programme was established in 1971 to “establish a scientific basis for enhancing the relationship between people and their environments.” Currently, there are 759 biosphere reserves across 136 countries worldwide in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR). These biospheres carry out three key functions: conservation, sustainable development, and logistic support. They connect people and nature, sustaining the beauty and benefits of healthy lands and waters. Within the United States, the Biosphere Network (USBN) includes 28 biospheres, providing invaluable landscape conservation and sustainable development at local and regional levels. Biospheres must undergo a periodic review every ten years, submitting reports to the UNESCO International Coordinating Council of the WNBR for verification of their activity and function. With many U.S. biospheres due for review in 2026 and 2027, the University of Michigan SEAS capstone team was tasked with providing technical assistance to strengthen capacity and prevent the network from losing any biosphere regions. The capstone team’s work was divided into four deliverables: an ArcGIS StoryMap, a qualitative community needs assessment, a gender inclusivity research paper, and a climate resiliency report.
