The primary objective of this project was to conduct research on the local food system within a five-county region of southeastern Michigan (Washtenaw, Monroe, Lenawee, Wayne and Jackson counties) to inform the work of the Food System Economic Partnership (FSEP). Our research included a literature review focused on models of alternative food systems, an analysis of the opportunities for an intentionally localized food system in the region, a multi-sector survey of food system stakeholders, and a qualitative look at the food system through the development of a Community Food Profile. The outcomes of this research will support FSEP's mission to "catalyze change in the local food system" by informing the development of local, agricultural economic development opportunities, food system networks and collaborative multi-stakeholder partnerships in southeastern Michigan.
