Meijer GHG Scope 3 – Phase 2: Supplier Engagement and Emission Reduction Goals
Goals & Objectives:
This project will enable Meijer to set a greenhouse gas (GHG) supplier engagement goal, which will contribute to reductions in Scope 3 emissions.
Theoretical Justification, Social Benefit, or Significance:
As a retailer, we know that the majority of our GHG emissions are Scope 3. Since Meijer is committed to reducing GHG emissions, it makes sense to extend that commitment to Scope 3 where Meijer’s influence can multiply. Additionally, while Meijer’s current GHG Scope 1 and 2 goal is science-based, the goal is not verifiable by the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) due to the lack of Scope 3 goalsetting. This project will enable Meijer to set a Scope 3 reduction target that is SBTi verifiable and in line with the 1.5°C pathway that is necessary to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Also, this project will enable companies in Meijer’s value chain to further consider or begin their emissions reduction efforts.
Specific Activities & Duration:
This project aims to build upon the Scope 3 emissions inventory and calculation framework that was developed by 2021-2022 SEAS students (Scope 3 - Phase 1) in alignment with WRI’s Greenhouse Gas Protocol. Students on the Scope 3 - Phase 2 project will work on four major components that allow Meijer to set, implement, and achieve a GHG Scope 3 supplier engagement goal. The main components are outlined below:
1. Benchmarking: First, students will evaluate and identify best practices regarding emissions-focused supplier engagement across the retail industry. These findings will inform the creation of the goal and plan. During this time, the team will also familiarize themselves with the Scope 3 work done to date to understand Meijer's value chain and relative category impacts.
2. Goal Proposal: Using the benchmarking findings and Meijer's Scope 3 inventory data, students will propose a Scope 3 supplier engagement goal. This should be a measurable and time-bound target. During this step, students will also consider whether Meijer should pursue an SBTi-validated emissions-reduction target, which would not be possible without a qualifying Scope 3 goal.
3. Implementation Plan: The proposed goal must be complimented by a plan that allows Meijer to achieve it. The plan will include details such as engagement methodologies, data collection/management tactics, and an estimated timeline. The team will assess how to best engage small, local, and diverse suppliers on the topic of greenhouse gas emissions in addition to large national and international CPG companies. This work should complement Meijer's supplier diversity initiatives, which prioritize incorporating and supporting suppliers from diverse backgrounds.
4. Hands-on Implementation: As time allows, students will work with Meijer buyers and suppliers to begin implementing the engagement plan.
At the end of the project timeframe, students will present their work to a Meijer audience, informing the group on the topic of Scope 3 engagement strategy. The primary deliverables (benchmarking overview, proposed goal, and implementation plan) will be shared with the Meijer team in a written format. This work is crucial to the carbon reduction pillar of Meijer’s sustainability program.
Integrative Approach:
The project will require students to integrate skills related to carbon accounting, stakeholder engagement, business, communication, and goal setting. Students will develop independent deliverables to present a cohesive and comprehensive Scope 3 goal and engagement plan.
