EAS 677.083 - Environmental Policy Implications of the 2024 Election
Regardless of the outcome, the 2024 election will bring significant consequences for environmental policy. Will the United States be able to take further action to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions? Will the administrative state reprise its role in environmental protection, or will the government's ability to protect the environment continue to erode? Throughout the term, we will analyze reporting on current events to understand how the results of recent elections have shaped the prospects for environmental policymaking in the coming years. To better understand current events, we will discuss academic books and articles examining questions relevant to environmental policymaking, such as whether reforms can be enacted under divided government. Students will learn how electoral politics affects the actors, interests, and institutions that shape environmental policy, and how to communicate effectively about strategies for enacting and implementing environmental policy under political constraints.
