Understand complex ecological systems for a range of applications, including siting and zoning decisions, ESG reporting, climate mitigation and adaptation planning, sustainable yield, nature-based-solutions, restoration and conservation.
Learn life cycle assessment and methods to calculate carbon footprints and improve environmental performance across product and service lifecycles. Confidently evaluate sustainability claims, and make data-driven decisions to improve resource circularity and design more sustainable production and consumption systems.
Gain technical skills in GIS for spatial analysis, siting, risk and equity assessments. Be prepared to take the GISP® exam, which is required to become a certified GIS professional.
Create just and sustainable solutions through a deeper understanding of the intersection between people, place and power to effectively analyze the multiple drivers of environmental issues and address complex challenges and behavior change.
This course has given me ways to build credible and evidence-based arguments based on nature-based solutions. I can actually provide informed decisions for adaptation strategies rooted in increasing biodiversity and facilitating resilient behaviors, because I now understand and know the complexities, from keystone predators to environmental heterogeneity.
The most valuable aspects of this course were the way it introduced life cycle thinking in a structured and practical way, and how it helped connect environmental concepts to real-world systems and decision-making. I especially appreciated learning how to evaluate products and processes from a broader systems perspective.
Throughout my personal life and professional career, I had been practicing, or at least trying to practice, the concepts we covered, but I didn't realize they had specific names or frameworks. This class has grounded me in these theories and frameworks, which enhances my understanding and sense–making in my current work.
