Project Management and Implementation Science

EAS
501.117
Description

Students will learn the fundamentals of project management, focusing on applications in sustainability and international development. Projects are the central means through which organizations try to meet specific sustainability and development objectives. They can be standalone initiatives or be nested within organizational structures. Creating, implementing, and successfully completing projects is at the center of modern organizational life. No wonder project management is one of the most sought after areas of skills and training in advertised jobs today – out of a total of 170K jobs advertised in sustainability, conservation, and international development last year (min. salary 75K, min. educational qualification = MS degree), more than 50K job descriptions included project management in the job description, ahead of such skills as data analysis (~13K), machine learning (~7K), negotiations (~5K) or conflict management (~5K) (Source: Burning Glass technologies job market report, 2019). Focus areas of learning will include 1. Project life cycle; 2. Analysis of project context; 3. Communication, leadership and teamwork; 4. Governance; 5. Scheduling; 6. Resource management including human resources and organizational dynamics; 7. Procurement; 8. Risk management; 9. Project quality management; and 10. Monitoring, reporting, and evaluation. Lectures, guest lectures, case analyses, presentations, use of project management tools and techniques, and student-led discussions on assigned themes in relation to course materials will drive learning outcomes.
