Alumnus work in hydroelectricity: injecting renewable energy into New York City
Over the years Trevor McManamon has worked in the renewable energy industry, environmental research consulting, and project development, all of which have set him up well for his work as a Principal Consultant for PA Consulting’s Global Energy & Utilities group. At PA--a management consultancy that specializes in strategy, technology, and innovation--Trevor focuses on analyzing trends, issues, and policies affecting power markets.
One of his professional successes includes supporting the development of the Champlain Hudson Power Express (CHPE) HVDC transmission line, which aims to begin construction next year. CHPE is projected to benefit the environment by decreasing carbon dioxide emissions from New York state by 3.4 million metric tons per year by displacing fossil fuels with a firm supply of 100% renewable energy. McManamon explains that “while hydroelectricity is not perfect, there are few projects that would have the same emission reduction impact as injecting renewable electricity into New York City, which has one of the least efficient and dirtiest grids in the U.S. along with an extremely high population density”.
McManamon’s interest in the energy industry first sparked as an undergrad, “I took a course in undergrad in which our term project was upgrading an article on Wikipedia focused on an environmental topic so that it is peer-reviewed journal quality. I chose wave power, which was my first in-depth exposure to the renewable energy industry”. McManamon is also a world traveler. He spent 2019 on sabbatical in places like Norway, Peru, Tanzania, Italy, Croatia, and many more.
McManamon believes that SEAS has helped him in his successful career, “in addition to providing connections and a direct recruiting pipeline to PA, it set me up for success by preparing me well to hit the ground running. Additionally, it’s kept me striving towards ensuring that my work is focused on environmentally beneficial projects.”
