Local Organizations Implementing GSI
Below is a growing, non-exhaustive list of Detroit-based organizations engaged in green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) planning, installation, and maintenance. This list is actively updated as new projects emerge. If your organization—or a project you know of—is not included, please reach out so we can add it.
Eastside Community Network — Hamilton Rainscape Learning Lab
- ECN’s Eastside Climate Action Coalition (ECAC) helped install this outdoor learning space with green stormwater infrastructure such as rain gardens. This site is used to host classes, workshops, and events that allow community members to learn more about stormwater issues on the Eastside
- Supports communities and organizations in installing rain gardens and green infrastructure through their Eco-D programs.
- The City of Detroit partners with multiple organizations to aid in the implementation and review of a wide range of GSI projects, including constructed wetlands, green alleys, rain gardens, and permeable pavement.
- Helps residents and neighborhood groups install and maintain rain gardens to manage stormwater and increase green space. Detroit Future City also has a step-by-step guide to planning and planting your own rain garden, linked here.
- Installed a green stormwater parking lot using permeable pavement at their Neighborhood Resource Center to reduce strain on the combined sewer overflow system.
- Supports stormwater management through workforce development through implementation, maintenance, and on-the-job training of native plans. Has installed green infrastructure such as the bioswale at Franklin Park.
