SEAS and the Landscape Architecture program hosted the 2018 Whittemore Lecture on January 25.

The lecture featured three panelists – Jennifer Dowdell, Jennifer Missett, and Tom Stosur – who together recently led a city-wide “Green Network Plan” for Baltimore. The plan has been heralded as, “a bold vision for reimagining vacant and abandoned properties and transforming them into community assets.” Integrating ecology into an open-space planning process, it supports resilience, quality of life, and revitalization for all community members.

  • Panelist JENNIFER DOWDELL serves as Project Manager and Landscape Ecological Designer and Planner for Biohabitats, a design studio specializing in conservation planning, ecological restoration, and regenerative design.
  • Panelist JENNIFER MISSETT is Bioregion Team Leader and Senior Water Resources Engineer with Biohabitats.
  • Panelist TOM STOSUR is Director of the Baltimore City Department of Planning.

The Harlowe O. Whittemore Lecture Series at SEAS was established in 1977. The series is named for Professor Harlow Whittemore, a nationally recognized leader in landscape architecture and community planning. After receiving his master’s degree in Landscape Design at Michigan in 1914, he immediately joined U-M’s faculty. Professor Whittemore taught and served as chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture and City Planning until his retirement in 1958. In addition to his prominent role at U-M, he was instrumental in developing the concept for the Huron-Clinton Metro Park Authority. The endowment fund for the Whittemore Lecture was created with gifts from many of Professor Whittemore’s family, friends, and former students.
