The calm after the storm: U-M research confronts extreme weather—and aims to curb its effects
As Michigan experiences more frequent flooding, heavier rainfall, warmer winters and extreme heat, University of Michigan researchers are studying how these changes affect the Great Lakes, public health and local communities.
U-M School for Environment and Sustainability Associate Professor Drew Gronewold, for instance, looks at fluctuating lake levels caused by increased precipitation.
Donor support enables Gronewold and other U-M researchers to collaborate with local governments to improve stormwater and wastewater systems, expand hands-on learning opportunities for students working alongside organizations like NASA and the National Weather Service, and advance research on home weatherization, climate forecasting and Great Lakes protection.
