CSS is Turning 25!
The Center for Sustainable Systems is turning 25! What began in 1991 as the National Pollution Prevention Center for Higher Education (NPPC) has grown over 25 years into the authority on sustainable systems. In the process, CSS has produced 200 projects, 500 publications, and 2,000 alumni who have made a difference globally.
When a US EPA competitive grant launched the NPPC in 1991, its mission was to collect, develop, and distribute educational materials on pollution prevention. In 1997, the mission expanded to encompass sustainability and systems analysis.
Since then, CSS has produced some of the leading research on sustainable systems, engaging students from across schools, colleges, and the world. The Center continues to fulfill its mission of public education through its sustainability factsheets, which lay out sustainability drivers, challenges, and solutions on over two dozen topics.
CSS also influences the campus and the world through sponsorship of Sustainability Without Borders, a student organization focused on creating networks of practitioners and communities to develop and implement environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable projects.
Says CSS director and co-founder Greg Keoleian, “We are proud of our alumni, faculty, staff, and partners in guiding and improving the sustainability of energy, mobility, the built environment, food, and other product systems, and look forward to celebrating with you all this fall.”
SNRE will be hosting a 25th anniversary celebration September 29-October 1, 2016.
