A workshop to prepare early-career researchers to tackle some of the Amazon rainforest’s most pressing challenges is being hosted by the University of Michigan and the Federal University of Pará in Brazil.

The workshop is organized jointly by the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) Institute for Global Change Biology (IGCB) and the Amazon Socio-biodiversity Integrated Center from the Federal University of Pará. Hosted in Belém, Brazil, more than 50 researchers, professors and students came together to discuss data analysis, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, ecological modeling and scenario building for the future of the Amazon.

The Brazil-U.S. partnership aims to train professionals in integrating environmental and satellite data to support strategic decisions in conservation, restoration and land-use planning.

Participants from SEAS include Professor and Director of IGCB Robert Reich and Thiago Gonçalves-Souza, an assistant research scientist.

The theoretical portions of the course are being broadcast live on YouTube.
