Congratulations to Chandler Sachs, a SEAS PhD student affiliated with the Center for Sustainable Systems, for being awarded a Department of Defense (DoD) National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship. The U.S. government fellowship was awarded through the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and Sachs was recognized for his work on resource security. The prestigious three-year fellowship awards 150-350 fellows annually and is designed to encourage early researchers to pursue doctorates that align with military service research and development (R&D) efforts.
Sachs is a second-year student at SEAS, whose research focuses on critical materials, data science and supply chains, and flows of natural resources. His research interests include complex systems, government R&D policy, critical infrastructure risks, and security and social vulnerabilities related to coupled human-environment systems. Before coming to U-M, he received his M.Phil. from the University of Cambridge, Christ's College, worked for the RAND Corporation in Washington, D.C. and received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University.
