According to new research from researchers at the Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) housed in the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS), wild weather swings are poised to become more common in the Great Lakes region. The analysis spans decades of data about large storm systems, known as midlatitude cyclones or extratropical cyclones, which are important drivers of winter weather in the region.
One of the study's authors, associate research scientist Ayumi Fujisaki-Manome, says that the extent of their connection to the region's climate patterns has been underexplored.
Abby Hutson, assistant research scientist at CIGLR, is also an author of the study.
