About

Dr. Stephen Jane is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute for Global Change Biology, where he is co-advised by Drs. Karen Alofs and Jacob Allgeier. His work seeks to understand how aquatic ecosystems are responding to regional to global scale changes, and the consequences of those changes for ecosystems and the people who rely on them. His work explores how ongoing alteration of lake thermal structure cascades into impacts on biogeochemistry, interacts with other stressors to affect habitat availability for aquatic organisms, alters the quality of fish as food for human consumption, and more. At the University of Michigan, he is working with a team of scientists across several universities to model how shifting oxythermal habitat through time across thousands of central US lakes may impact fish biodiversity. He often works within interdisciplinary teams to better understand the multifarious aspects of global change in relation to aquatic systems. His doctoral work helped establish lake deoxygenation as a systematic response to warming, and much of his work seeks to refine understanding of this phenomenon and its downstream implications.
