Qiuyi Yang

Entering Year
2023

Qiuyi is a doctoral student in Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan. Her research interests focus on environment, health, and sustainability. She is particularly intrigued by the potential of big data such as crowdsourced data in elucidating the relationship between urban infrastructure and the physical and mental well-being of its inhabitants.

With a diverse educational background in architecture and urban planning, Qiuyi has cultivated an extensive research experience in generating and scaling up evidence for mitigating health inequities for people of all ages and abilities. Her work has explored the therapeutic effects of nature exposure on the well-being of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). She is passionate about enhancing restorative experience through sustainable environmental design, planning and policy making.

Prior to her doctoral education, Qiuyi earned a master’s degree in regional planning from Cornell University. Her academic pursuits there were characterized by a profound focus on the intersection of health and urban planning. Her thesis and projects reflected a keen interest in transformative initiatives, such as fostering intergenerational connections in senior housing and the pivotal role of planners in sustainably expanding child care. These endeavors not only underscored her commitment to health equity but also demonstrated a holistic understanding of sustainability within urban settings.
