Changing the game in ecological research and management

Nearly everything humans eat, drink, and breathe is the product of a living organism that inhabits a natural or human-dominated ecosystem. Protecting biological diversity and ecosystem function through conservation and restoration is necessary to produce the goods and services that allow people to prosper.

Our community responds to this challenge by working to protect the Earth’s biodiversity and ecosystem services. That’s the SEAS approach.

Diverse forests hold huge carbon-storage potential, as long as we cut emissions, study shows

A new study suggests that global forest carbon storage has the potential to make a meaningful contribution to slowing climate change. Forest carbon storage has been a controversial topic, with the main concerns being around the potential adverse environmental impacts of mass tree plantations, carbon offsetting schemes and greenwashing. But the new study, with an international team that includes SEAS Professor and Director of the Institute for Global Change Biology, Peter Reich, finds that, along with cutting emissions, restoring global biodiversity and ending deforestation holds huge carbon-storage potential.
