Gifts of Security
Substantial tax savings can be obtained by making contributions of appreciated securities held for at least one year to a public charity, such as U-M. This method of gifting offers you two significant tax savings that can reduce the net cost of your gift when compared with an equal gift of cash. First, you pay no capital gains tax on the appreciated portion of the securities. Secondly, you receive a charitable deduction equal to the fair market value of the security on the date of the gift up to thirty percent (30%) of adjusted gross income, with a five-year carry-over period.
For additional information about how to make a transfer of securities, visit this how-to webpage or contact the Securities team at the U-M Gift and Records Office at umgiftsec@umich.edu.
Matching Gifts
Many employers give generously to educational institutions by matching employees’ charitable contributions. You can search the U-M database of companies to determine whether your organization will match gifts made by individuals.
If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your employer, and send it completed and signed with your gift. We will do the rest. The impact of your gift to U-M may be doubled or possibly tripled! Some companies match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses.
For questions on matching gifts, contact U-M Gift and Records at umgift@umich.edu or call toll-free at 1-888-518-7888. This phone queue is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (EST).

Estate and Planned Giving
Planned gifts provide creative and flexible strategies for you to pursue your philanthropic, financial and estate planning goals. Among the financial benefits you may receive are lifetime income for yourself or your family, and substantial tax savings. However, the greatest benefit of a planned gift to SEAS lies in knowing that you are supporting work that is important to you, the SEAS community, and our planet’s environment for generations to come.
As you reflect on your own legacy, consider the long-term impact you can have through the various forms of planned gifts.
