What is Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) and How Can it Manage Stormwater?

Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) uses natural processes to absorb, filter, and slow stormwater runoff in developed areas. In cities like Detroit, GSI can help reduce flooding, improve water quality, and lessen pressure on aging sewer infrastructure during heavy rainfall events.

Common examples of GSI include rain gardens, bioswales, constructed wetlands, green roofs, and permeable pavement.

GSI Tools and Resources

This page includes tools and resources to help households, neighborhoods, and organizations plan and implement GSI projects across Detroit. Resources include:

  • Educational materials and technical guidance
  • An open-access map of GSI projects across Detroit
  • Information on drainage credits and stormwater fees
  • GSI project types and examples
  • UM Green Stormwater Infrastructure Projects
  • A directory of organizations working on GSI projects
