Congratulations to Ruta Hailu (BA '28), who has been selected as a recipient of the Udall Undergraduate Scholarship. The highly competitive program identifies future leaders in environmental, Tribal public policy and health care fields, with students participating in their respective schools' internal competitions before being considered by the Udall Foundation.
Hailu, who is not only majoring in the Program in the Environment but also in Social Theory and Practice and Anthropology, says her passion for environmental justice (EJ) is rooted in her experiences as an immigrant from Eritrea and her organizing work in Detroit. She continues to work in Detroit on EJ initiatives, and says that, as a recipient of the Udall Scholarship, she hopes to become a movement lawyer supporting community-led EJ efforts.
