Did you know that each ChatGPT request is estimated to use 2.9 Wh (watt hours) of electricity, while a standard Google search uses 0.3 Wh? Or that an average American weighing 180 pounds generates their own weight in garbage every 37 days? Did you know that switching from an internal combustion engine pickup truck to a battery electric SUV could reduce emissions by an average of 69%?

Facts matter, which is why the Center for Sustainable Systems (CSS) at the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) has developed an extensive collection of factsheets covering a breadth of sustainability topics such as climate change, energy, water, materials, transportation, environmental justice and many more. The updated and improved 2024 collection is now available. It includes 32 factsheets made up of over 1,800 facts and 139 graphics compiled from over 1,175 sources.

In addition to updated content that includes the latest data, facts and developments, the 2024 factsheets boast a fresh look and feel. This includes improved online and PDF formatting for accessibility and ease, as well as nearly 50 brand-new, interactive graphics. Simply mouseover or click on the charts and maps to engage with the graphics and see more information.

Each factsheet presents data on patterns of use, life cycle impacts and sustainable solutions. Updated annually by SEAS graduate students, the collection is provided as a fee-free public service resource to inform journalists, policymakers, business professionals, students, teachers and the public.

“In 2024, with misinformation on critical sustainability issues rampant, it can be difficult to find trustworthy and accurate information. We are pleased to provide this thorough, vetted and carefully curated collection of trustworthy information that the public can count on,” said Shoshannah Lenski (MS ’11), CSS associate director. “We’re especially proud that we’ve invested significantly to enhance this year’s collection to be more user-friendly and engaging.”

The collection began in 2001 with just three factsheets and has been expanding in scope and reach ever since. In 2023, almost half a million people viewed the factsheets, according to Lenski.

Want to support our efforts with future factsheets? Consider donating to our Fund the Facts campaign. Contributions will help expand the CSS Sustainability Factsheets by supporting graduate student interns who update the collection annually.
