From May 6-10, a group of U-M faculty and staff have put their teaching and research on hold to make connections in the state of Michigan as part of the Road Scholars tour.
The tour, in its 20th running this year, is taking U-M faculty throughout the state to learn about its people, economy, politics, culture, educational systems, health and social issues, history, and geography.
In this episode of Michigan Minds, SEAS professor Pamela Jagger and LSA professor Bethany Hughes talk about what they hope to learn on the week-long bus trip, and how it could inform their teaching or research once they return.
“Connecting with people and communities in the state for a publicly funded university is massively important,” said Jagger. “I think we have a real obligation to understand where the students come from, and a lot of them want to stay here and make a contribution.”
Said Hughes: “I’m most excited about getting to know what makes the state tick, and what different communities are excited about, what they’re invested in, and what they’re proud of,” she said. “And I think we’ll be able to learn about that in many different ways.”
