About

Margaret B. Shackell, Ph.D., CMA, CPA, is a visiting scholar at the University of Michigan whose research and teaching explore how better information can lead to better decisions for people, organizations, and the planet. Her sustainability research spans food waste, gender equity, climate change, sustainable consumer behavior, and the ways organizations measure and communicate their environmental and social performance. Her recent work on food waste includes research across multiple countries, with a forthcoming article in the British Food Journal.

This fall, Margaret is teaching Accounting for Sustainability: Tools for Decision-Makers at the University of Michigan, where she helps students use quantitative and qualitative information to tackle real-world sustainability challenges. She is particularly interested in making sustainability practical: moving beyond broad commitments to ask what organizations should measure, how they should measure it, and how that information can lead to better decisions. She also develops sustainability-focused teaching cases and educational materials designed to bring complex environmental and social issues into the classroom. Margaret is Senior Editor of the IMA Educational Case Journal, and her broader body of work includes research and educational materials on climate change, corporate governance, social sustainability, and sustainable behavior.
