SEAS Emergency Grant

Amount
$500
Description

The SEAS Emergency Fund is intended to supplement the financial needs of SEAS graduate students who encounter an emergency situation. Each request will be evaluated individually on a case-by-case basis. Situations eligible for funding include: support for food, temporary housing, emergency travel, issues related to the need to work off-site, inability to work for an extended period because of self-quarantine, self-isolation, or social distancing, or due to a lack of employment opportunities or loss of internship funding, medical, dental, or mental health emergencies for the student or, in some circumstances, for immediate family members who live with the student, major accidents and events such as fire and natural disasters, expenses related to the death of an immediate family member.

There are no set award amounts as they will vary depending on each individual's situation. Students can request up to $500, with possible exceptions for additional amounts, if needed and available. Students who are experiencing extensive financial difficulties that exceed the scope of this fund should contact Kim Elliott, [email protected].

Normal living expenses such as rent, car repairs, child care, utilities, taxes, insurance, pet-related expenses, and computer/laptop replacement are generally not covered by the SEAS Emergency Grant.

Eligibility Requirements.  Students must be enrolled in a SEAS degree program. SEAS PhD and Master’s students are limited to one SEAS Emergency Fund award during their graduate career.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a graduate student currently enrolled full-time, or on detached study and pursuing a SEAS degree program on the Ann Arbor Campus.

Unfortunately, we cannot grant Emergency Funds to cover the following:

  • As a replacement for student loans
  • Anticipated or chronic funding gap
  • Conferences or conference travel.  See SEAS Travel Grant funding.

This award has a rolling deadline. You can apply at any time during the academic year (First day of classes - Last day of exams).
