The Clinic partners with community-based organizations, nongovernmental organizations, and public agencies to work on innovative solutions to Metro Detroit's most pressing sustainability-related challenges. Every project we support is rooted in community-identified priorities and aligned with one or more of the Clinic's five Focus Areas: 

  • Environmental, Energy, and Water Justice

  • Housing and Neighborhoods

  • Sustainability and Climate Action 

  • Green Infrastructure and Watershed Management

  • Circular Economy

Project Types and What You'll Receive

Clinic-supported Capstone (18 months)

Clinic Capstone Projects are our most comprehensive offering, ideal for organizations tackling long-term, complex sustainability challenges. You will be assigned to an interdisciplinary team of up to five graduate students from the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) and a faculty advisor dedicated to providing specialized support and tangible deliverables. 

Project Overview:

  • Duration: ~18 months

  • Team: Up to 5 SEAS graduate students and a faculty advisor

  • Interest Form Due: August 1

  • Project Launch: January 

  • Up to 2 project proposals per organization per year

Community Resilience Project (Up to 12 months)

Community Resilience Projects offer shorter-term collaboration with up to 12 months of specialized support. Unlike Master's Capstone Projects, they do not have the same graduation requirements, offering a more flexible project design that can be responsive to emerging community needs. 

Project Overview:

  • Duration: <12 months 

  • Rolling applications accepted year-round

  • Submission is open to community partners, faculty, and students

  • Ideal for testing ideas, piloting new initiatives, or supplementing existing programs 

Sustainability Assistance (Up to 100 hours)

Sustainability Assistance Projects offer up to 100 hours of rolling, rapid-response technical assistance, providing Clinic partners with the technical expertise to meet their immediate needs. 

Project Overview:

  • Duration: Up to 100 hours
  • Rolling applications accepted year-round
  • Submission is open to community partners, faculty, and students
  • Ideal for organizations seeking short-term targeted help
