We provide tuition rates and expense estimates on this page. Please note that these rates are yearly rates, and include two semesters of tuition (one full academic year). Tuition rates are updated annually every July.

Federal Work-Study & Loans (FAFSA) aid is administered by the University of Michigan Office of Financial Aid.

To be considered for FAFSA, complete the 2024-2025 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) now. The University of Michigan school code for your FAFSA application is 002325. U-M Financial Aid will post an online award notification to your student account once your application is processed.

Federal aid is only available to US citizens and permanent residents.

SEAS offers a variety of funding opportunities to first-year master’s students. These include the Ann Arbor Farm & Garden Club Scholarship, the Dow Sustainability Fellowship, the Wyss Scholarship, SEAS Travel Grants, and Honor Awards.

SEAS students frequently pursue Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) positions and/or Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA) positions.

To be eligible for these competitive positions, a student must be enrolled in a SEAS degree program, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be in good academic standing.

GSI and GSRA appointments are unionized positions, secured on a term-by-term basis, and provide a full-tuition waiver, monthly stipend, and health insurance. Most positions require 20 hours of work per week.

The applications for Fall GSI appointments open in March and the applications for Winter GSI appointments open in October.

To pursue a GSI position:

• Let the faculty instructor know you are interested
• Keep an eye out for an announcement from SEAS about the GSI application period
• Apply for GSI positions just as you would for a job
• Conduct phone or in-person interviews, if asked of you
• Seek positions related to your undergraduate degree and coursework
• Draft a strong cover letter, highlighting any prior teaching experience
• Attach teaching evaluations to your application, if applicable

Most students do not obtain GSI positions for their first semester. However, the likelihood of receiving a position increases the longer a student is enrolled at SEAS. Most GSI positions are held by second-year students.

You may be eligible to apply for GSI positions hosted outside of SEAS. The following units have hired SEAS students to serve as GSIs in the past:

• Program in the Environment (PitE)
• Biology
• Chemistry
• Sociology
• Anthropology

All GSI positions are advertised here.

GSRA positions are not posted, as they must be secured directly through individual faculty members. These positions are funded by faculty research grants. SEAS has, on average, 20 students serving as a GSRA each term.

Rackham Graduate School offers a variety of fellowship competitions, including the:

• Rackham Non-traditional Fellowship
• Rackham International Student Fellowship
• Rackham Barbour Scholarship

Students may also apply for conference travel and research funding through Rackham.
